Arnsberg is intriguingly urban, excitingly historical, and diversely close to nature in a beautiful, forest-rich landscape.
The city of Arnsberg embodies life in South Westphalia with all its charm and unique features: winding alleys and half-timbered houses, urbanity and modern diversity, and last but not least, the picturesque surroundings with the hills and lakes of the Sauerland make this city a truly special place. Arnsberg grew from 15 historically rich small towns and villages, which were merged into a regional center in 1975. A look into its history reveals that Arnsberg has been a seat of counts since 1070, later became the capital of the Electoral Cologne Sauerland, then the Prussian administrative seat, and today, as the seat of the district government, is one of the five locations of the regional presidents of North Rhine-Westphalia.
All these eras have shaped the city, located in the triangle between the Möhne, Sorpe, and Henne reservoirs, leaving behind significant architectural landmarks such as Herdringen Castle, the fortified Burgmann houses in Neheim, and the three Premonstratensian monasteries in the districts of Oelinghausen, Rumbeck, and Arnsberg
The district of Arnsberg, with its historical heritage, is well worth a visit and can be best explored through exciting guided city tours. The historic town center, visible from afar, sits atop a ridge. Its romantically winding alleys and the ruins of the Electoral castle form the medieval heart of the city.
Neheim, on the other hand, is vibrant and modern, known as the "open-air shopping center." This shopping district is a major attraction for the entire region. The Sauerland Cheese Market—held two weeks before Easter—and the more than 1,000-year-old traditional fair in September are well known far beyond the region.
Concerts, theater performances, cabaret, and exhibitions, along with the open-air stage in Herdringen and a wide range of diverse events, shape Arnsberg’s cultural scene. The city's event calendar is packed throughout the year, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The excellent gourmet restaurant for a lovely evening for two can be found in Arnsberg, along with a large number of cozy pubs and small eateries. Some restaurants have started offering their guests special culinary creations as part of themed evenings, and special arrangements can also be booked. There is something for every taste and budget: everywhere, people gather in a relaxed atmosphere for a freshly tapped beer in one of the many rustic and charming pubs or small restaurants - or even in a wine bar. During the summer months, some exceptionally beautiful beer gardens and courtyards open their doors, and the street cafés invite visitors to linger, see, and be seen. In addition to local cuisine, which often features traditional Westphalian home-style cooking, numerous international specialties are also available. When it comes to ambiance, there is something to suit everyone: whether dreamy and romantic for a nice evening with a partner or friends, modern and sleek for official business dinners, or a traditional tavern setting - the choice of restaurant is not always an easy one.
For those looking to stay overnight in Arnsberg, there are also plenty of options. In addition to a wide range of hotels in different categories, visitors can choose from guesthouses, inns, holiday apartments, and vacation homes. Cyclists will find several accommodations near the Ruhr Valley Trail that have joined together under the "Quality Businesses Ruhr Valley Cycle Path" label, offering particularly cyclist-friendly services.
These exciting tourist offerings and the unspoiled nature of the Sauerland give the region a special charm. The Arnsberg city area lies within one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. The Arnsberg Forest Nature Park is a unique nature reserve, offering pure enjoyment of nature with its exemplary network of hiking trails. Arnsberg is also one of the most historically significant cities along the well-developed Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. The Ruhr River flows through Arnsberg for over 30 km, showcasing the city’s diversity. Water sports play a key role here: canoeing on the river is a truly special experience. But water sports enthusiasts can also enjoy sailing, rowing, windsurfing, or catamaran sailing on the Möhne and Sorpe lakes, while swimmers can have fun at the new NASS leisure pool in Hüsten. Competitive swimmers will find a 25-meter sports pool, while water lovers can enjoy various slides, a lazy river, and whirlpools, and young children can have fun in a large water play area. Those seeking relaxation will find pure wellness in the large sauna garden with a variety of sauna types and in the saltwater outdoor pool of the new leisure complex.
Whether minigolf, cycling, sailing, horseback riding, or paddling—Arnsberg has something for both professional and recreational athletes of all kinds. Well-maintained green spaces in the city and the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park invite visitors to go mountain biking, hiking, or skating.

Studies have shown that the city lies at the center of a region stretching from the Benelux countries through Germany and Scandinavia to the new EU states in Eastern Europe. The connection via the A46 and A445 motorways not only provides excellent regional accessibility but also ensures access to the European transport network. A special advantage for business travelers: Dortmund Airport is just a 25-minute drive away.
